About Light and Time.

Jess Hamilton - The Designer

In the late 1990s, my tech-savvy older brother introduced me to the vast world of the Internet, and specifically to the art and practice of webdesign. Through online tutorials and resources, viewing the source of various websites I admired and a great deal of trial and error, I taught myself the basics of standards-compliant HTML and CSS. I created mostly personal sites for myself throughout my adolescence, and considered webdesign to be just a hobby of mine.

Then, in the fall of 2004, I moved to Bronxville, New York, to attend Sarah Lawrence College, where I planned to study Creative Writing. As part of my financial aid, I was to find a work-study position on campus, and I found myself in the SLC Academic Computing office inquiring about a position as a Web Aide. In October 2004, I was hired to the position of Web Aide and began working with Emily Sharp of digitalemily.com. Emily quickly became my webdesign mentor and has taught me everything I could have wanted to learn about PHP, MySQL, XHTML and advanced CSS through projects she assigned to me for faculty members and campus departments at SLC.

In the meantime, I began exploring the wonders of WordPress as a blogging software and CMS, and quickly learned how to use it to create extensible, easily editable/updatable and visually pleasing sites. I currently use WordPress on a few of my own sites, and recommend it to most of my clients.

In the fall of 2007, I began working for the Soapbox Collective as an Associate Producer. I was there introduced to a CMS called Joomla!, and am currently exploring it on a day-to-day basis. When I am more comfortable with it, I will be adding Joomla! installation as one of my freelance services.

As my skills became more and more refined, I began receiving requests to begin offering my services outside of Academic Computing, as a freelance service. Light and Time was born from this.

Light and Time

Light and Time originally started out as my personal photography site, but didn’t get very far for various reasons. After sitting dormant for some time, in 2007 I decided to use it to my advantage for my budding freelance design work. L&T opened officially in May 2007, although I have been taking customers for some time before that.
